Gig Harbor North
Gig Harbor North is a retail shopping area.
Development began in 2002 with the opening of anchor stores Albertson's
grocery and Target retail. The shopping center also has several
smaller stores including a Subway, Verizon, Tanning, Hairmasters, Key Bank,
and two credit unions. Home Depot, Office Depot, Pier One, Petco,
Starbucks, Costco, a host of eateries and other stores.
The area was once forest with deer, fox, coyotes, rabbits and many birds. The old growth forest was cut long ago and what remains of today's forest is second growth fir, cedar, wild cherry and alder. Many of these trees are one hundred feet tall.
When the Gig Harbor North development started clearing forest for the Home Depot project, there were wild rabbits seen at the sidewalk in front of the MacDonald's restaurant. Displaced coyotes were seen in broad daylight in the Gig Harbor North surrounding communities.
Pierce County permits development without mitigation to resident wild life. However, the county also prohibits shooting dangerous animals even if they are displaced by county permit. Residents are advised to notice when additional forest clear cutting begins and to keep cats, small dogs and children inside during the forest clearing process due to the displacement of coyotes.
